DElaware Community Composting Initiative Sites

Year 1 Progress

We are currently working with 5 partners throughout New Castle and Kent Counties to establish composting programs:

  • PFD Talley Day Park Community Composting
    • This site will be open to DE residents for food scrap composting
    • DNREC permitting for the site is pending; construction is planned for fall 2023
    • This site is seeking members! Complete this survey to learn more about joining!
  • American Turners of Delaware
    • This site will be used for composting crop residuals from the attached community garden
    • Construction is nearly complete
  • Wilmington Friends High School
    • This site will be used to compost food scraps and yard waste from the WFS campus and crop residuals from the school's garden
    • Construction is planned for fall 2023
  • The Nest
    • This site was constructed in June 2023 by Eagle Scout, Colby Wilson
    • It will be used for composting crop residuals from the attached community garden until a DNREC permit can be attained for composting food scraps
  • Frear Elementary
    • This site will be used to compost food scraps and yard waste from the schools' grounds and garden.
    • Construction is planned for winter 2023

The DCCI program aims to provide the technical assistance, partial funding, and resources to help community partners launch composting sites. We oversee projects and provide assistance when necessary to help the partners produce quality compost.

Our Partners Bring:

Our partners provide at least 1manager (liaison), responsible for managing the site  and its members on a weekly basis. The partner must have 5+volunteer members ( or be a school) as well as a physical site of approximately 270 square feet, and is at least 5-8ft away from property lines. Additionally, the partner must be committed to the site and project by signing an MOU with DCCI to ensure dedication and maintenance.
